Millard Fuller would have turned 77 years old on 3 January. The number 7 abounds this year, fittingly because the number has such Biblical significance and because the Fuller Center for Housing is an ecumenical Christian ministry.

Not only would this have been the founder's 77th birthday, but this year the Fuller Center for Housing marks the 7th anniversary since Millard and Linda Fuller launched the ministry. Koinonia Farm, from which this ministry sprang, will mark its 70th anniversary.

So what better time to embark upon an effort to house 700 families in 700 days? This campaign is a supplement to the wonderful work our covenant partners already do across the United States and around the world.

When Peter asked Jesus how many times we need to forgive others, Jesus replied, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy seven times”. Matthew 18:22

According to the Orthodox Study Bible, 777 represents the threefold perfection of the Trinity.

In Genesis, we learn the heavens and the earth were created in six days and God rested on the seventh, metaphorically. Lamech was 777 years old when he died. Luke chose 77 names back to "Adam, the son of God," and 70 to Enoch in his genealogy unto Jesus Christ (Luke 3:23-38).

These numbers, "7-times," "77-times," and "70 x 7," are found in the Old Testament, especially in Genesis and Daniel. In Daniel, following the same theme of forgiveness and reconciliation, we are presented with an important prophecy as to when the Messiah would come (Daniel 9). We are told that this would be fulfilled in "70 x 7" years.

The number seven has deep spiritual significance. It has been held sacred by the Hebrews and other Semite peoples since the dawn of time.

Levitical purifications take seven days. Naaman was commanded to dip seven times in the river Jordan. Elijah sent his servant seven times to look out for rain. The exile in Egypt lasted seven years. Samson’s wedding feast was seven days long. Ancient Jews were guided by seven Noahide laws – the seven laws of Noah. In days, weeks, months, years and millennia, Jews mark time around the number seven.

Jesus personified the 7 spiritual works of mercy: feed the hungry; give drink to the thirsty; welcome the stranger; clothe the naked; visit the sick; visit the prisoner; bury the dead.

Chagall was born on 7 July (seventh month) 1887. His last name is spelled with 7 letters. One of his most famous self-portraits features his hand with seven fingers (perhaps related to the 7 branches of the Jewish candelabrum). Apolo Anton Ohno holds the record for winning the most medals in U.S. Winter Olympics history. Ohno, age 27, joins the 7-phenomenon upon winning 7 career Olympic medals.

The celebrated speed skater is 5 feet 7 inches tall. On week one of Dancing with the Stars, he received scores of 7, 7 and 7 and ultimately won the contest with partner Julianne Hough.

Another “Apollo 7” (slightly different spelling) was the U.S. space mission that orbited the earth for 10 days in 1968.

Big Ben is one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World. Eastis’ photo of Big Ben in London depicted in the seven book shows the hands at exactly 7:07. Above the clock face there are 7 large arches and two sets of seven windows.

007 is the agent number for British spy James Bond. Giovanna of Seven Magazine says that Daniel Craig is the seventh actor to star as James Bond. Sean Connery played James Bond in seven films. Ian Fleming’s novel You Only Live Twice shows Agent 007 briefly as “7777”.

“7” includes two seven-word quotes from Winston Churchill: “...we are entering a period of consequences”. Seven more words from the eloquent Churchill: “Never give in—never, never, never, never...” Before Winston Churchill bought Chartwell in 1922 it was empty for seven years. For Churchill, the Seven Years’ War was nothing less than the first “world war.” (1756-1763).

The Lotus Seven automobile was launched in 1957 followed by Caterham 7. Both Caterham 7 and Lotus Seven have active clubs around the world. The Caterham 50-year anniversary emblem appears on page 269 of “7”.

The longest nose ever recorded by the Guinness World Records is that of Thomas Wedders of the UK and it measured 7.5 inches. “A sulk can last anywhere between seven minutes and seven years,” according to The London Guardian (2007) . It is said that Durham, Sheffield, Bristol, Cambridge and Edinburgh are built on seven hills.

British composer Edward Elgar was one of seven children. Novelist Ivy Compton-Burnett was born in 1884, the seventh child of a London doctor, and the first child of her mother, Katharine. ElviSeven - Elvis Presley's ties to # 7

Elvis Presley was born on 8 January and he loved the number eight. He registered his jet named “Lisa Marie” as “N88OEP.” He also liked number 7. His “Hound Dog” jet has “N777EP” in large letters.

Many of Elvis’ songs were recorded on 7-inch records.

On 7 July (7th month) 1954, Elvis debuted on radio.

The Tennessee Historical Marker in front of Elvis’ Graceland is numbered 4E 77.

Elvis died in 1977 on 16 August (1+6=7). He had gone to sleep that morning around 7 a.m. The ambulance took Elvis from Graceland at 2147 Elvis Presley Boulevard to Baptist Hospital 7 miles away.

Within the series, 7 telephone cards had a denomination of $7, including a solid gold card produced by Mitsubishi in Japan. A $7.77 Elvis card depicted Elvis teaching his pet chimpanzee Scatter to “read” on a movie set in 1962. Production was limited to 25,777.

Number seven has fascinated me for years. As a fellow author and septaphile, I am delighted about the publication of "7, the Number for Happiness, Love and Success," by Jackie Leo. I may be one of the first seven people in the world to comment publicly about Leo's seven book which is an intriguing and thought-provoking literary exploration of the wondrous world of seven.

I applaud Leo and her publisher TWELVE for recognizing the cultural, mystical and scientific influence of the number 7, as I did in my book "7: The Magical, Amazing and Popular Number Seven," which Aventine Press published this past March. http://www.theSevenBook.com . I had no idea of the influence of the number seven outside of its reputation for being lucky when one is at the Craps’ table. I’ve been enlightened and astounded by the magical attributes of number seven by David Eastis...who has published his book “ 7: The Magical, Amazing and Popular Number Seven.” ( http://theSevenBook.com ) Recently I heard him pour forth with abundant excitement about his book, as well as the uncanny events and facts that are associated with all things seven.

The book has even more to offer for the septaphile – 307 pages of seven, in fact. Some obvious associations come with seven days in the week, colors in the rainbow, seven Wonders of the world and the number of notes in the musical scale. But, due to David’s exhaustive research, there’s and encyclopedia of knowledge to be discovered in his book of Seven. Like – Oprah Winfrey’s last name contains 7 letters, she donated $7 million to help 100 African American men go to college and there were 7 million subscribers when her channel debuted, among many other whimsies. (I suspect it was not a bad idea to make Oprah the first celebrity to grace the pages of his book. (Me thinks David is always thinking!) Opps – there’s Oprah again! Four quotes are attributed to her at the beginning of the section on “Quotes and phrases with 7 words.” She is trumped only by Mother Theresa, who appears first.

Sports fans will be thrilled with the associative trivia presented in the book, but I really liked the things I never noticed such as the Live Earth concerts took place on 7 continents on 7-7-07; seven is the number of cats allowed in California households, and WYSIWYG, as well as what it stands for – ‘what you see is what you get’ are sevens. Holy Cow (7 letters there too), can this all be an accident?

David has obviously had a great deal of fun with this book and it shows with the lightheartedness and enormous variety of information he’s included. Like me, he faces the task that writers don’t count on and usually don’t like – marketing and making something of the book. Getting it read. However, he’s already had a mention on “Metroactive,” a Silicon Valley weekly newspaper. (Reviews: http://www.the7book.com/reviews7.html )

One of the touching elements about his book is his tributes to the Kennedy family who was apparently also very fond on the number seven. Just a few examples – JFK was born in 1917 (hard to believe, isn’t it?), JFK’s nephew is Anthony Kennedy Shriver (each name has 7 letters) and has become highly respected as the founder of Best Buddies (7 letters there) – an international organization that creates friendships and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. http://www.bestbuddies.org/ And further more Sargent Shriver – Anthony’s father - had first and last names spelled with 7 letters.

There’s something so euphoric about handing out the first copies of your newly published book and David was glowing as he passed me a copy over the breakfast table. He’s such an upbeat guy that he is unfazed by the fact that a fairly famous writer with a top publishing house is coming out with another book on the same number on December 7th (of course). He’s welcoming it as an addition to illuminating the world about the magic of his number and Candy Chand, an experienced, published author agrees – it will heighten the interest of septaphiles who are never satisfied with just one book. Most touching is David’s dedication of the book to his Italian born wife Sabrina – is it just coincidence that there are 7 letters in her name?

An updated edition of the first-ever book devoted to the cultural influence of the number 7 is nearing completion. Aventine Press is scheduled to release a second printing of 7: The Magical, Amazing and Popular Number Seven by author David M. Eastis (ISBN 1-59330-777-2) by 7 December 2009.

Like the initial release that was published in March 2009, the enhanced version explores the magnetism that the number 7 has exerted, from ancient cultures to the present day. Eastis, an enthusiast and authority on the number 7, brings the “7 phenomenon” he has identified to life with more than 2,777 references to the number that has held special and sacred significance for thousands of years.

“7”—the seven book—documents the strong symbolism of the number 7 and its multiples for people of widely divergent backgrounds, including Mother Teresa, Jesus, Elvis Presley, Gandhi, Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey. The book also reveals how the number 7 influenced people as divergent as philosopher Aristotle, original Batgirl actress Yvonne Craig, 7 Eleven Inc.
