7 Cheers for the United Kingdom’s Sevens


David Eastis’ 7: The Magical, Amazing and Popular Number Seven—the world’s first seven book—features more than seventy-seven fascinating connections among UK sports, pop culture, history, religion, literature and the intriguing number seven.

Big Ben is one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World. Eastis’ photo of Big Ben in London depicted in the seven book shows the hands at exactly 7:07. Above the clock face there are 7 large arches and two sets of seven windows.

007 is the agent number for British spy James Bond. Giovanna of Seven Magazine says that Daniel Craig is the seventh actor to star as James Bond. Sean Connery played James Bond in seven films. Ian Fleming’s novel You Only Live Twice shows Agent 007 briefly as “7777”.

“7” includes two seven-word quotes from Winston Churchill: “...we are entering a period of consequences”. Seven more words from the eloquent Churchill: “Never give in—never, never, never, never...” Before Winston Churchill bought Chartwell in 1922 it was empty for seven years. For Churchill, the Seven Years’ War was nothing less than the first “world war.” (1756-1763).

The Lotus Seven automobile was launched in 1957 followed by Caterham 7. Both Caterham 7 and Lotus Seven have active clubs around the world. The Caterham 50-year anniversary emblem appears on page 269 of “7”.

The Austin 7 was the basis for the initial Nissan, Lotus and BMW’s, according to Nigel Coulter of the Brooklands Centre 750 Motor Club. The 7W was built by Ford in the UK from 1937-38.

Both "England" and "Britain" are spelled using 7 letters.

Queen Leonora was born in 1162 as the seventh child and second daughter of King Henry II of England and his wife Queen Alienor. Henry Moore, the sculptor, was born in 1898 in Yorkshire, as the seventh child. Rod Stewart christened his 7th child Alastair (when he was 7 months old) in Edinburgh, Scotland in June 2006. Soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, a former “winger” for the
Manchester United, loved his shirt number 7. When he first signed
with the team in 2003 he requested a number other than 7 to avoid
the pressure associated with living up to the expectations of other
players who previously had word number 7 shirts, including
George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.
But team manager Alex Ferguson believed that the power of 7 was
transferable — and he was right.

An article published in the British newspaper The Sun included this quote by Ronaldo: “Ferguson said ‘You’re going to have No. 7,’ and the famous shirt was an extra source of motivation. I was forced to live up to such an honour.”

Ronaldo had “CR7” inscribed on a cupboard, sofa and bed cushions — matching his seven-shaped table and jewelry. “The No 7 shirt is an honor and a responsibility,” said Ronaldo.

David Beckham, meanwhile, has a VII tattoo and a DB7 clothing line.

In the British Darts Organization the champion is the one who wins 7 games. "British" is spelled with 7 letters. Carl Breeze, British racing driver celebrates his birthday on 7-7 (1979). Alistair Potts, British rower, was born on 7-7-1971. Tour de France 2007 commenced in London on 7-7-07 (7 July 2007).

The longest nose ever recorded by the Guinness World Records is that of Thomas Wedders of the UK and it measured 7.5 inches. “A sulk can last anywhere between seven minutes and seven years,” according to The London Guardian (2007) . The Ritz’s Palm Court in London features seven varieties of tea. "The Ritz" is spelled with 7 letters.

There are 19 variations of 20 and 50 pence coins in the UK that have 7 sides. According to Coin World, seven other countries have minted 7-sided coins: Isle of Man, Jersey, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, Barbados and Gibraltar.

No 7 is a popular brand of cosmetics produced by Boots in the UK.

There are dozens of hotels, pubs and other places throughout the UK that stand as a tribute to the universally popular number seven: 400-year-old Seven Stars Pub in London. Seven Sisters is the name of an Underground tube stop located on Seven Sisters Road. Thomas Neale’s Seven Dials monument was built in the 1690’s at an intersection of seven roads in the West End area London. The Royal Seven Stars Hotel, Devon. The Seven Stars, Hay on Wye, Herefordshire.

The Seven Champions of England were medieval patron saints from Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, France and Spain and England. In Richard Johnson’s 1597 The Famous History of the Seven Champions of Christendom, he tells of St. David of Wales who slept for seven years in the enchanted garden of Ormandine and many other adventures of seven. It is said that Durham, Sheffield, Bristol, Cambridge and Edinburgh are built on seven hills.

British composer Edward Elgar was one of seven children. Novelist Ivy Compton-Burnett was born in 1884, the seventh child of a London doctor, and the first child of her mother, Katharine. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a popular London play based on the movie which was first staged in the U.S. in the 1970’s and opened on Broadway in 1982. Lucky Seven is a play in London that examines 14 peoples’ lives at 7-year intervals.

J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final Harry Potter book, was released on 21 July (seventh month and 21 equals 3x7) 2007. It was originally rumored to be released on 7-7-07. In the Harry Potter series, seven is considered to be a magical number. There’s a trunk with seven locks. Lord Voldemort is suspected to have split his soul into seven pieces. The creative author’s last name is spelled with 7 letters.

The Chronicles of Narnia are a seven-volume, children’s fantasy series written by British theologian C.S. Lewis. The Seven Magical Jewels of Ireland is a book by Robert Adams. Se7en is an online magazine in the UK. Sevenstones Media is based in England. Seventh Quark Magazine is a UK magazine edited by Alex Keegan.

Scouting was founded in 1907 by retired British Army Lt. General Robert Baden-Powell. Scouting Celebrated 100 years in 2007.

Catholic feasts held on 7 July honor the lives of Hedda of Winchester and Palladius of Ireland. “Ireland” is spelled with 7 letters.

Jon Pertwee, a British actor, was born on 7-7-1919. Politician Michael Howard was born on 7-7-1941. Michael Ancram, another public leader, celebrates his 7 July 1945 birth date. In January 2007 John Browne, CEO of British Petroleum was named as Britain’s most impressive businessman for the seventh time in eight years by survey of his peers.
